چکیده

A DBMS kernel architecture is proposed for improved DB support of engineering applications running on a cluster 01 worl<stations. Using such an approach, part of the DBMS code an application-specific layer is allocated close to the corresponding application on a workstation while the kernel code is executed on a central server. Empirical performance results from DB-based engineering applications are reported to justify the chosen DBMS architecture. The paper focuses on design issues of the application layer including server coupling, processing model and application interface. Moreover, a transaction model for long-term database work in a coupled workstation-server environment is investigated in detail.

Modeling and Availability Analysis of Internet Data Center with various Maintenance Policies

In this paper, the authors have focused on the stochastic analysis of an internet data center (IDC), which consists of a database main server connected to a redundant server. Observing the different possibilities of functioning of the system, analysis has been done to evaluate the various reliability characteristics of the system. The system can completely fail due to failure of redundant serve...

Utilising Multiple Computers in Database Query Processing and Descriptor Rule Management

A fundamental problem to be solved in systems which derive rules from database tables to use in query optimisation is the workload involved. If the data server has to do the work it can interfere with query processing and cause slower query answering, which is the opposite of the required effect. This paper reports our investigation of the use of multiple workstations in the same local network ...

Separating indexes from data: a distributed scheme for secure database outsourcing

Database outsourcing is an idea to eliminate the burden of database management from organizations. Since data is a critical asset of organizations, preserving its privacy from outside adversary and untrusted server should be warranted. In this paper, we present a distributed scheme based on storing shares of data on different servers and separating indexes from data on a distinct server. Shamir...

Networking AT-class computers for image distribution

The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications is investigating a local area network approach to a system for the distribution of digital document images among a set of image retrieval and display workstations, each based on an AT-class computer. The goal of the study is to investigate rapid, online, multi-user access to a database of document images stored on optical disks. The ...
